Welcome
Missouri S&T offers courses in French, German, Russian, and Spanish, and previous
instruction is not required. After two semesters of foreign language study on
campus you should be able to converse on an elementary level. Furthermore,
foreign literature is generally introduced in the second or third semester.
You may fulfill your Bachelors of Arts or Minor requirements from any of
the four foreign languages offered.

General Information on
Placement test in French, German, Russian and Spanish:
Students who have studied French, German,
Russian or Spanish in high school and intend to continue in the
language must contact the foreign language instructor before the
semester begins in order to take a placement exam. This will help
determine which course is most appropriate to register for. Other factors
which the instructor may consider are the number of years the language was
studied, grades earned, etc., and the instructor reserves the right to change a
student's course placement if he/she believes the student has not registered
for a course at the appropriate level.
Students should not sign up for a course lower than
the one indicated by the placement test unless they receive
the permission of the instructor. We encourage students to take the
placement examination soon after their arrival on campus and to register for a
foreign language course soon afterwards, while the knowledge acquired in high
school is still fresh.

Knowing foreign languages and cultures broadens students' horizons, provides
insight into one's own language and culture, and increases job placement
opportunities in an increasingly global community.
